Removing old finishes
In some cases, a log home has not been properly protected for a long enough period of time that the outer layer of wood must be completely removed in order to open the fresh wood locked away beneath the surface. In these cases, we use specialised power sanding tools to sand homes down by hand, and the result is absolutely transformative!
By sanding the logs down in this way, we preserve the quality of the logs and the wood’s unique characteristics. This method pays dividends when it comes to the look, feel, and quality of the finished logs. We effectively remove the damaged wood while honouring the hand-peeled character of the logs!
If the existing stain is in good shape and there is no evidence of damage to the wood, there may be other ways to prepare the surface for new stain. At times a log wash or a lighter buffing method may be an option. We discuss all of these aspects of the refinishing with you when we meet.
